The life cycle of a Butterfly

The life cycle of a Butterfly

The life cycle of a butterfly is truly amazing. Butterflies have four life stages, the egg, the larva (caterpillar), the pupa (chrysalis), and the adult butterfly. Each of the four stages are very unique to individual species of butterflies which is part of what makes watching and raising butterflies so much fun.

What are the 5 stages of a butterfly?

  1. THE EGG,
  2. LARVA (CATERPILLAR)
  3. THE PUPA (CHRYSALIS)
  4. THE ADULT BUTTERFLY.

The life cycle of the butterfly is one of the most amazing transformations that occurs in nature. It's fascinating to watch, which makes it a wonderful educational opportunity for kids and adults alike. Butterflies go through four major stages of metamorphosis: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult.

The butterfly life cycle includes four stages: stage one: egg; stage two: larva; stage three: pupa; and stage four: adult butterfly. Butterflies transform through these stages. This transformation is called metamorphosis.

The first stage of a butterfly's life is a very small oval, round, or cylindrical egg, depending on the species of butterfly. When the egg hatches, a “larva” or “caterpillar” emerges. Caterpillars must grow quickly, so they eat continually.

During the second stage, a caterpillar (or larva) hatches. It is the long, worm-like stage of the butterfly life cycle. Most caterpillars have patterns, stripes or patches and sometimes spine-like hairs. In this stage, the caterpillar needs to eat lots to grow.

The four life stages during this transformation or metamorphosis are – egg, larva, pupa and adult butterfly. At every stage, the butterfly looks different and has a different goal to fulfil.
